A Lesson Through Food

“Life comes through the food.” ~Turkish Proverb

12+ years ago, I couldn’t cook.

If you ask my ex husband, he will quickly tell you that my cooking wheelhouse at the bright, vivacious age of 21 consisted of mostly one, semi-okay recipe for spaghetti.

That’s it.

It was on repeat along with HUNDREDS of other failed cooking attempts.

Fast forward to age 23 and I was still bright, vivacious, and cooking challenged, but I was a first-time, stay at home mom who was desperately seeking connection.

That connection came in the form of blogging.

The blog that this page represents.

Yeah. I know.

10+ years ago this blog went by a different name, and the naive girl who spun all those tales had no idea that when she was writing and building her blog that she was building connection.

And when she was commenting on other SAHM moms blog posts, playing their blog games, and “following” as many blogs as possible, she had no idea that she would stumble across a blog that had this recipe.

A recipe I have made over and over again for the last 10+years.

If you ask my sisters, this pork roast recipe is...LEGEN...wait for it...DARY.

It is hands down the easiest crockpot recipe on the planet, but to is so much more.

This recipe represents a simpler time in my life.

A coming of age tale.

A girl navigating first time marriage and first time motherhood.

A girl who had finally learned to make something other than spaghetti.

And while the story may have written itself a little differently over the last 10 years, I can’t help but be grateful for this recipe and the blog that lead me to it.

Because both continually show me where I’ve come from and where I am going.

Tonight I got to introduce Baby Girl #2 to this recipe.

She is getting a much different mama than her big sister.

She is getting a mama who works more than full time, but also, has finally found her way around the kitchen.

A mama who makes MOST of her baby food and who lets her be adventurous with table foods.

A mama who is still bright, but a lot less vivacious.

A mama who knows that all the best stories are told around the kitchen table and that sometimes even Gordon Ramsey takes it back to his roots.

So, here’s to pork roast recipes on Thursday nights and all the little things that make us who we are.

May we all never forget where we are going, but may we hold onto the little things that remind us of where we have been.
